HARPER: Hi! I'm Harper. I'm 3 in Earth years. OLIVER: Hi Harper. I think you're almost 2 in Martian years. HARPER: I like Earth years better. OLIVER: Oh yeah? Why is that, is it because you're older in Earth years? HARPER: Yeah. And there's birthdays. OLIVER: There's birthdays in Martian years, too. I think your Martian birthday is coming up soon. HARPER: I didn't think I had a Martian birthday. OLIVER: Why not? HARPER: I never had one. OLIVER: I guess you were pretty little when you had your 1st Martian birthday, you probably just don't remember it. You like birthdays? HARPER: Yeah. OLIVER: What about other people's birthdays? HARPER: Yeah. I like it when Charlotte sings, and Isabella, and Benjamin. I like when they sing birthday songs. OLIVER: You like Isabella's singing? HARPER: Yeah. Kind of. OLIVER: Maybe other people hear something I'm not. HARPER: And then we get to eat! OLIVER: Well, there's Circle in between that, right? While the food is cooking. HARPER: Yeah. OLIVER: I suppose you don't get into Circle that much, probably. Hey, Harper, do you ever do a thing called "play Circle"? HARPER: Yeah! OLIVER: How does that work? HARPER: Sometimes I get to be Olivia, and say what to do! And sometimes I get to be Liam, and just look, like, really serious. And then sometimes I'm you. OLIVER: Oh really? How does that work? HARPER: You say some big words, and then tell people to write stuff down. OLIVER: ... HARPER: I like it when Mia plays Oliver, but she doesn't usually. But she does it really well. She sounds just like you. OLIVER: Oh, really? I didn't know that. HARPER: Yeah. It makes people laugh when she does that, because she's so good at it. OLIVER: I see. I may have to ask Mia about this sometime. Hey Harper, what's your earliest memory? HARPER: Of what? OLIVER: Of anything. HARPER: I remember when we went in the rover to find Charlotte's parents. That was a while ago. OLIVER: Yeah, I guess it was now, but what about something longer ago than that? HARPER: I don't know. OLIVER: Do you remember your last Earth birthday? HARPER: Yeah! OLIVER: See, that was longer ago. What do you remember? HARPER: I remember your mom and dad telling me happy earth birthday. OLIVER: Yeah? I think I remember that, too. Do you remember what they gave you for your birthday? HARPER: No, what? OLIVER: It was a stuffed animal, from Earth. I think it looked like a rabbit, maybe? Dad had to get them to add it to one of the supply rockets they send, he had them add it just for you. HARPER: Oh! OLIVER: Do you know what happened to it? Maybe it's back in your parent's apartment, I suppose. HARPER: Maybe. I don't really remember. But I remember them all singing happy birthday. [laughs] They were so bad at singing! It was funny. OLIVER: You're right, you know, we were pretty terrible, I remember that. There were too many of us and no one knew who was leading, and it got slower and kind of dirge-like. It's much better when we just have Charlotte sing lead and we set the pace with chopping vegetables. HARPER: Yeah! OLIVER: You know, you have a nice singing voice, Harper, did you know that? HARPER: Thanks! OLIVER: Do you like mine? HARPER: Not really. OLIVER: What? HARPER: But I like you, though. Just not your singing. OLIVER: Oh, that's ok then, I suppose. I guess it'll have to be. Do you have anything you would want to ask Earth? HARPER: What happened to my bunny? The one your dad gave me? OLIVER: I don't think they would know that, Harper, but we'll see if we can find it sometime. Maybe before your next birthday, ok? HARPER: Cool.
